Selectae e Veteri Testamento Historiae

Pars secunda · A Latin Reader of Old Testament Stories and the Life of Christ

The stories of the Old Testament, from the Maccabees to David and King Hezekiah, with the life of Christ, the Blessed Virgin and the Apostles, as generations of Catholic schoolchildren first read them in Latin.

Jean Heuzet's Selectae e Veteri Testamento historiae (1726) retells Scripture in simple, accessible Latin, and was reprinted for Catholic schools for more than a century. This second part is bound with his Synopsis of the life of Christ. In keeping with the natural method, every long vowel is marked, and the notes in the margin are entirely in Latin. Harder words are explained by the words they come from, by words of like meaning, or by a short sentence from the Vulgate or another classic text.

With twenty-nine engravings by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, an index of names and an index of words.

For readers who have finished their first Latin reader and want more comprehensible input, for homeschool and classroom use, and for Catholics who wish to read the Church's Latin with ease.
