Dialogi
The Dialogues, with the Life of St Benedict
The four books of Dialogues that Pope St Gregory the Great wrote in 593, at the request of the monks of his household, on the miracles of the holy men of Italy and the life of the soul after death. The second book is the Life of St Benedict, the only early account of the father of western monasticism: his years in the cave at Subiaco, the founding of Monte Cassino, and his death.
The Benedictine Latin text from Migne's Patrologia Latina is printed in full, with the English translation of 1608, as edited by Edmund G. Gardner (1911), facing the Latin throughout, section by section, together with Gardner's notes. Readers with some Latin can follow Gregory in the original, while those new to the language can follow the English alongside it. The Catholic Encyclopedia's articles on St Gregory and on St Benedict and Gardner's own introduction open the book.
Includes a full table of chapters and an index of names.
For students of Latin, seminarians, religious, clergy, oblates, and Catholics who wish to encounter the Fathers and the lives of the saints in their own words.
